Weingartner Upsets in ‘Haugton’

Weingartner (named after one of my dear colleagues Ken Weingartner) upset at 28-1 to win the Peter Haughton Memorial Final in 1:55.2. Power Play was second and Big Chocolate finished third.

Weingartner went for the lead, with Trojan Horse in second and Power Play first over in third. “Play” took the lead at the three-eighths and Lightning Storm challenged in second. “Storm” went off stride approaching the half.

Big Chocolate came out and applied pressure to Play around the far turn. Weingartner sat in the pocket third. In the stretch, Play had the lead and “Chocolate” drifted out, giving room for Weingartner to come two wide. Weingartner passed Play at the eighth pole and drew off to win the $400,000 “Haughton.” Power Play held on for second and Big Chocolate came with late rally for third.

Weingartner paid $58.60. He is owned by Christina Takter, John Fielding and Brixton Medical, trained by Jimmy Takter and Johnny Takter was in the sulky to win the “Haughton” in 1:55.2
