
Alsace was challenging Mist at the half, which went in 53.3 (:27.2). Alsace cleared the lead at the five-eighths and Mist was in second. Custard was boxed in third. “Wind” was stuck first over at three-quarters in 1:20.3 (:27).
Alsace was drawing away in the stretch, while Custard came into the passing lane and Hugadragon was closing six wide. But they could not catch Alsace. Custard held off Real to finish second and “Hug” settled for fourth.
“He felt just as good as he did last week,” driver Ron Pierce said.
“He keeps getting better and better,” said trainer Tony O’Sullivan. “I think he was ready for these races.”
Alsace Hanover returned $4.40 to win. He went the mile in 1:48.3, a lifetime mark and a world record.
