The Noel Daley-trained Broadway Hall colt who returned at three after having a severe leg problem, took the lead from Fawkes, who rushed out early, and went the first quarter in :27.3.
Broad Bahn would cut the half in :56.1 and three-quarters in 1:24.2. He was never threatened, even though the favorite, Chapter Seven (Mike Lachance) was closing strongly in the final lengths.
Luckycharm Hanover (David Miller) came first over, giving “Seven” cover but it was all a chase around the two turns.
Chapter Seven, in only his second start at two, took the place spot.
Fawkes (Yannick Gingras) held for third at 70-1 to make the final. Whit (Tim Tetrick) was fourth and fifth went to Luckycharm Hanover.
Orlando and Big Sky Storm broke early and were out of it, while Blue Porsche, one of the highly touted contenders, did not fire and didn’t make the final.
“I was able to rate my mile pretty well,” said Brennan about putting Broad Bahn on the lead right away. “He’s got a great attitude, he’s big, he’s strong, he gets himself where he has to be at the beginning of a race.” Brennan said he thinks the colt can win the final.
